In a 30 January 2008 telephone interview, an official at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC provided the following information regarding the issuance and renewal of Nigerian passports in the United States (US).
In November 2001, all Nigerian embassies and consulates in the US were authorized to issue and renew Nigerian passports (Nigeria 30 Jan. 2008). Nigeria has an embassy in Washington, DC, and consulates in Atlanta and in New York (ibid.).
An individual wishing to renew his or her Nigerian passport must mail in his or her expired passport to a Nigerian embassy or consulate, along with a completed application form and the appropriate fees (ibid.). Those who live close to an embassy or consulate may renew their passport in person (ibid.).
An individual wishing to replace a lost passport must provide the embassy or consulate with a police report and another piece of identification proving Nigerian citizenship (e.g., a birth certificate) (ibid.; see also Nigeria n.d.).
All Nigerian passports have a code found under the word "authority," which represents the location where the passport was issued (Nigeria 30 Jan. 2008). For example, the code 543 means the passport was issued in Washington, DC, while the code 542 means the passport was issued in Atlanta (ibid.). A passport with the code 346 was issued in Nigeria (ibid.).
