According to a representative at the Embassy of Syria in Washington, it not possible for such a child to acquire Syrian nationality (28 Jan. 1992). A representative at the Consulate of Syria in Montreal stated that the parents or the child should make an official request at the Ministry of Interior in Damascus (28 Jan. 1992). They must prove that the parents have had residence status in Syria for at least five years (Ibid.). The source has no guidelines available regarding the approval of this type of request (Ibid.). A representative of the Consulate of Syria in Toronto stated that the father should apply for the child when he/she is a minor, but, upon reaching adulthood, the child can apply on his/her own (28 Jan. 1992). The request should be presented to the Ministry of Interior in Syria, but there are no guarantees that the request will be approved (Ibid.). Additional information on this subject is currently unavailable to the IRBDC in Ottawa.
