A 31 January 1997 Amnesty International article states that the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) (Maoist) has a political wing, the United People's Front (Samyukta Jana Morcha, SJM).

A 2 July 1998 IPS article states that the UPF is the "political wing of the revolutionary Maoists."

The Europa World Year Book 2000 states that the UPF is Maoist and "involved in 'people's war' in hills of west Nepal (2644)."

No information on whether the UPF is linked to parties other than the CPN (Maoist), or whether it is composed of smaller parties, could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
