Indian officials say they have killed a fifth gunmen who stormed an air base near the border with Pakistan, but at least one more gunman remains holed up more than two days after the attack on the heavily fortified compound.
Exchanges of gunfire with Indian security forces were continuing on January 4 at the Pathankot air force base.
At least seven troops and four other gunmen were killed in fighting on January 2 when several suspected Islamic militants infiltrated the base.
India's army said in a statement on January 4 that a building where at least one remaining gunman was firing from is part of the living quarters on the base.
Indian officials said the attack resembled previous assaults by suspected Pakistan-based militant groups, underscoring the fragility of recent efforts to revive talks between New Delhi and Islamabad.
Pakistan has condemned the attack and said it wants to continue to build on goodwill created by a meeting in December between India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
