For information on the 1998 on the refugee/asylum claim procedure for Chinese citizens, please consult the attached translated letter from the Counsellor of the Embassy of the Republic of Argentina dated 1 October 1998. The letter states that "Chinese citizens, like those of any other nationality, may apply for refugee status to the Refugee Eligibility Committee (CEPARE), an interdepartmental body responsible for considering such applications..." The letter also reports that "at least since the start of 1996 CEPARE has not received any applications [for permanent residency following the grant of a refugee claim] from Chinese citizens."

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
