The hostage-taker was holed up in a post office in Colombes, northwest of Paris.
French police say a gunman who was holding hostages inside a post office has been arrested and the hostages have been freed.
Police said there was no known link between the incident in Colombes, a city northwest of Paris, and Islamist militant attacks that killed 17 people in the French capital last week.
The AFP news agency cited a police source as saying that the man surrendered and that police did not storm the building.
RTL radio earlier reported that the man claimed he was armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle, a pistol, and grenades – and that he was holding three hostages.
It said police were in contact with the man and that he had made no specific demands.
