Former Polish President Lech Walesa has announced that jailed Russian former tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky will receive the 2013 Lech Walesa Award.
A press release from Walesa said Khodorkovsky is getting the award for "courage in promoting civil society values, determination in creating the foundations of economic freedom and an uncompromising attitude in the fight for justice and human dignity."
Walesa will present the award to Khodorkovsky's son Pavel at a ceremony in Gdansk on September 29.
The award includes a check for $100,000.
Mikhail Khodorkovsky, once one of Russia's richest men, was arrested in 2003 and later convicted of tax evasion, fraud, money laundering, and embezzlement charges.
His supporters say the charges were politically motivated.
He is currently in prison.
His sentence is due to end in 2017.
