STOCKHOLM, Sweden – A prominent Belarusian opposition journalist living in Sweden has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the attempted murder of her former husband.
A court in Stockholm also ruled on August 23 that Volha Klaskouskaya must pay 110,000 Swedish crowns ($15,000) to her ex-spouse as compensation.
Klaskouskaya was arrested in March after her former Swedish husband of Turkish origin accused her of trying to stab him.
In April, Swedish immigration officials ruled Klaskouskaya and her 11-year-old daughter from a previous relationship should be deported to Belarus for violations of immigration regulations.
The authorities said then that her 8-month-old son could stay in Sweden with his father.
