Moldovan President-elect Igor Dodon
Moldova's pro-Russia politician Igor Dodon has brushed aside fears that he would scrap a historic deal with the European Union following his presidential election victory.
Dodon defeated pro-Western candidate Maia Sandu in the November 13 runoff vote.
During the election campaign, he pledged to reverse the country's moves toward European integration, which includes the 2014 Association Agreement between the EU and Moldova.
But Dodon said at a press conference in Chisinau on November 15 that he does not plan to change the country's ties with the EU, insisting that he only wants better relations with Russia.
In an interview with RFE/RL on November 14, EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn suggested that Dodon wasn't serious when he talked about scrapping the EU deal.
"I also met him and he told me something else," Hahn said.
