The following information was provided in a 29 July 1998 telephone interview with a Mr. Nizam [Nazim] Uddin, Chief Organizer of the London office of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM) [formerly the MQM-Haqiqi. Not to be confused with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement of Altaf Hussain]. Mr. Uddin's mobile telephone number was obtained from an MQM [Haqiqi] membership letter that was provided to the Research Directorate. Please note that due to communicating overseas by mobile phone and that English is not Mr. Uddin's mother tongue, the information which follows is as precise as possible.
The MQM [Haqiqi] office was established in a residential home in Forest Gate, London, UK, in October 1997. It continues to be located there, although Mr. Uddin, Chief Organizer of the London office since the office opened, hopes to establish a proper office once the office is more financially secure. Although the MQM [Haqiqi] office has no telephone or fax numbers, Mr. Uddin can be reached by mobile phone. Four other individuals, members of the Organizing Committee, report to the Chief Organizer. Mr. Uddin was unable to provide specific information about the tasks and responsibilities of each of the five staff members, although he did state that the office campaigns about the situation of the MQM [Haqiqi] in Karachi, and produces a newsletter infrequently.
Mr. Uddin stated that since the MQM [Haqiqi] office opened in London, he has written approximately 12 membership letters for individuals within the UK and one for an individual in Canada. There is no cost to receive a membership letter. Verification of membership is carried out: the MQM [Haqiqi] head office of Afhaq Ahmed in Landhi, Karachi, is contacted and personnel there carry out the necessary verification. Mr. Uddin stated that recently, due to party policy, he was notified to stop issuing membership letters.
