Kazakh Financial Police have detained the chief of the state agency on the regulation of monopolies on bribery charges.
A police spokesman said on July 2 that Murat Ospanov is suspected of accepting a bribe of $200,000.
Ospanov is expected to be formally charged soon and the details of his pretrial arrest determined.
No further details were released.
Ospanov is not the first top Kazakh official detained or sentenced for graft in recent months.
Last week, Kazakhstan's former deputy defense minister, Baghdat Maikeev, was sentenced to six years in jail for bribe-taking.
Last year, several high-ranking Kazakh officials were sentenced to lengthy prison terms for corruption and bribery.
