In a telephone interview on 9 February 1995, an official with the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Ottawa stated that Turkey recognizes dual nationality with North Cyprus although an individual desiring this status must file an application with Turkish authorities (ibid.).
Specific information is not available to the DIRB on whether a citizen of North Cyprus who was once a national of Turkey is still considered a citizen of Turkey. According to the official, such an individual's citizenship status would depend on the circumstances of his/her case in accordance with Turkish law (ibid.).
For general information on nationality law in Turkey, please consult the attachment.
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
