According to a 1991 report published in Le Monde on 12 August 1991, the internally displaced Mozambicans numbered 1.8 million (12 Aug. 1991). The same source states that approximately one million Mozambicans were in Malawi as refugees (Ibid.). A March 1992 news report quotes the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), indicating that 980,000 Mozambican refugees were living in Malawi at that time (Reuters 20 Mar. 1992). The same report adds that, according to UNHCR figures, "another half million [refugees] are in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Swaziland" (Ibid.).

Please find attached a copy of the above-quoted Reuters report and two other documents (listed below) that provide similar figures to those given above. The World Refugee Survey 1992, for example, states that "at the end of 1991, there were 1,483,000 Mozambican refugees living in neighbouring countries (Malawi 950,000; South Africa, 200,000; Zimbabwe, 197,000; Tanzania, 72,000; Swaziland, 39,500; Zambia, 25,000)" (U.S. Committee for Refugees 1992, 47). More recent information on the number of internally and externally displaced people of Mozambique could not be found among the sources currently available to the IRBDC.
