According to The Encyclopedia of the Third World, "Officially, there are no ethnic minorities in Turkey. ... Members of ethnic minorities are treated as second-class citizens and are excluded from full participation and acceptance in Turkish life" (Kurian 1987, 2007). The sources regularly consulted by the IRBDC provide details only on Armenians, Greeks, Syrians and Kurds when discussing minorities in Turkey. The Encyclopaedia Britannica states that "Circassian communities exist in Anatolian Turkey (150,000) ... [and] officially, the Circassians are Sunnite Muslims" (1989, 326).

The IRBDC in Ottawa has no further information on this subject at the present time.
