Moldovans choose between Europe, Russia in local elections

Moldovans have voted in local elections considered a test of whether the country is committed to European integration or will seek closer ties with Russia.
The June 14 elections came two days after pro-European Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici resigned following his being questioned about the authenticity of his high school diplomas and university degree.
Voter turnout was almost 49 percent of the 2.8 million eligible voters.
In the mayoral election in the capital, Chisinau, early results with more than 80 percent of the votes counted showed Zinaida Greceanii, who is running for the pro-Russian Socialists, leading with 39 percent.
Dorin Chirtoaca, the pro-European mayor of the city since 2007, had 35 percent.
Opinion polls show the majority of regional seats being won by pro-Moscow parties that support Moldovan membership of the Russia-led Customs Union.
A runoff will take place on June 28 for seats with no candidate who secures 50 percent of the vote.
