Information on the situation of violence against women in Uruguay is currently unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa.

In her book entitled Out of the Shadows, Jo Fisher indicates in the context of protection that in 1986 "the first police station staffed by women for victims of domestic violence and rape was opened" (1993, 44). The author does not provide the specific location of the police station.

A representative of SERPAJ (Servicio de Paz y Justicia) in Uruguay indicated in a telephone interview that a police station, called "Comisaria de la Mujer", and specializing in providing protection to battered women is located at 1126 San Jose street in Montevideo (18 Jan. 1995). This source was unable to provide further information on the situation of battered women and on protection available to them.

For names, addresses, and mandate of women's organizations in Uruguay, please consult the attached Encyclopedia of Women's Associations Worldwide (1993) and Women's Movements of the World (1988).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find attached the list of sources consulted in researching this information request.
