The Internet website of the Workers Party of Brazil (Partido dos Trabalhadores, PT or PTB) reports that 115 municipal prefects (prefeitos) and 142 vice-prefects (vice-prefeitos) belonging to the PT were elected throughout Brazil on the 3 October and 15 November 1996 local elections (21 Nov. 1996). In Minas Gerais a total of 30 prefects and 29 vice-prefects belonging to the PT were elected, including prefect Jesus Lima in the municipality of Betim (ibid.). The source indicates that Betim was one of the municipalities where the local government was already held by the PT before the 1996 local elections, and adds that Alexandre Maria Neli of the PPS (Partido Popular Socialista) party was elected vice-prefect of the municipality (ibid.).

No information on gubernatorial elections in 1996 could be found among the sources consulted.

The Brazil Report of 1 December 1994 reported that as a result of the 3 October 1994 national election and the 15 November 1994 runoff election, the PT saw the election of its first two governors: Vitor Buaiz in the State of Espirito Santo and Cristovao Buarque in the Federal District of Brasilia.

The Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa stated during a 7 October 1998 telephone interview that the governor of Minas Gerais is Eduardo Azeredo, of the Partido Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB). The Embassy added that the elections of 3 October 1998 could result in gubernatorial changes throughout Brazil; official results are not yet available.

The Internet website of the state government of Minas Gerais indicates that the vice-governor is Walfrido Silvino dos Mares Guia Neto, a PT representative in the governing coalition "Todos por Minas" (1998). The state governing team (equipe de governo) includes other members of the PT (ibid.).

Please find attached a listing of PT prefects and vice-prefects elected in 1996, as well as an overview of the 1996 local elections.
