A nighttime curfew in place in the Iraqi capital for years is to be lifted later this week.

Officials said on February 5 that Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi ordered the curfew to be lifted as of February 7.

Abadi's spokesman, Rafid Jaboori, said he wants there "to be normal life as much as possible, despite the existence of a state of war."

This is "part of the response to terrorism and the war against it," he said.

The curfew, which has reportedly been in place since 2004, has failed to stop the frequent bombings that hit Baghdad.

A statement from Abadi's office said he had also ordered the reopening of several major streets in the city "to facilitate the movement of citizens."
