The information that follows was provided by consular staff at the Embassy of Moldova in the United States during a 28 October 2002 telephone interview.

A birth certificate issued in Moldova in the 1970s, whether it was issued in Russian or in Moldovan, would not have included the word "Roma." If a term would have been used to describe a parent of a newborn child as being a Roma or gypsy, the word used would have been "tsigan" (gypsy) written in the Moldovan alphabet; if the certificate had been issued in Russian, the word would not have been "Roma" either, but the Russian term for gypsy.
