Supporters of former Kyrgyz parliament speaker Akmatbek Keldibekov hold a rally outside the headquarters of the Osh regional government on December 2.
OSH, Kyrgyzstan – In Kyrgyzstan, thousands of supporters of former parliament speaker Akmatbek Keldibekov stormed the headquarters of the Osh regional government on December 2.
The protesters are demanding Keldibekov's release from detention.
At least 20 protesters were on horseback.
Police managed to prevent the demonstrators from taking over the building.
Keldibekov, a native of the Osh region, was arrested last month amid an investigation into alleged abuse of office and financial misdeeds while running the State Social Fund and Tax Service several years ago.
Keldibekov's lawyer, Tatyana Chilnikina told RFE/RL that a Bishkek City Court on December 2 upheld a Bishkek district court decision to keep Keldibekov in pretrial detention at least until January 19.
Keldibekov, a member of the opposition Ata-Jurt (Fatherland) party, served as parliament speaker between 2010 and 2011.
The leader of Ata-Jurt, Kamchybek Tashiev, has described Keldibekov's arrest as "political oppression."
