Although no specific references to actions by guerrilla or paramilitary groups in the Chiapas district of La Trinitaria could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate for the period in question, please refer to the maps cited in MEX38648.E of 8 May 2002. These maps show areas where guerrilla or paramilitary group activity has been reported in recent years.
The only published reference to an armed incident in La Trinitaria during the period in question and found among the sources consulted, is a news report on an attack by two armed men against two farmers travelling on a pick-up truck near the Guatemalan refugee camp at El Colorado, municipality of La Trinitaria (El Universal 6 July 1999).
In late 2000, La Jornada reported on an operation by the Federal Preventive Police (PFP) against paramilitary groups in Chiapas before the change of state government scheduled for 9 December 2000 (La Jornada 13 Nov. 2000). According to La Jornada, the Centre for Community Action Economic and Political Research (CIEPAC), a non-government organization, had noted the presence of armed civilian groups in various municipalities, including La Trinitaria; in some cases, the groups were said by CIEPAC to be linked to cattle ranchers, municipal or state officials (ibid.).
