Amnesty International (AI) has raised alarm over the fate of a man who has been abducted in Russia and forcibly returned to Uzbekistan.
The London-based group said on November 6 that Mirsobir Khamidkariev, a businessman from Uzbekistan, was reportedly abducted by Russian officers in Moscow in June, and returned to Uzbekistan the following day.
The statement quoted his lawyer, who was able to get access to him in Tashkent last week, as saying Khamidkariev was subjected to torture and other ill-treatment by law enforcement officers for two months to force him to confess to extremism charges.
It said Khamidkariev is at risk of being subjected to further torture, and raised concern over the fairness of his trial.
AI said Uzbek authorities have accused Khamidkariev of creating a banned religious extremist organization, a charge he has denied.
