The pretrial detention of the Kyrgyz parliament's former speaker, Akmatbek Keldibekov, has been prolonged.

Keldibekov's lawyer, Tatyana Chilnikina, told RFE/REL on May 26 that her client's pretrial detention had been prolonged until June 27.

Keldibekov, a member of the opposition Ata-Jurt (Fatherland) party, served as parliament speaker between 2010 and 2011.

He was detained in November amid an investigation into alleged abuse of office and financial misdeeds while running the State Social Fund and Tax Service several years ago.

Keldibekov has called the case against him politically motivated. His supporters have rallied across Kyrgyzstan after his arrest.

Keldibekov's pretrial detention term has been prolonged several times. His previous pretrial detention was to expire on May 27.
