Russian officials say that two gunmen who were carrying a powerful explosive device have been killed in Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan.
A spokesman for the National Antiterrorist Committee said the two were killed when police attempted to stop a car at a checkpoint in the Vinsovkhoz district in Khasavyurt.
The passengers in the car opened fire at police officers and one Interior Ministry security troop was wounded.
The dead individuals in the car have not yet been identified.
Two containers with explosives and devices to set off a bomb, arms, and ammunition were reportedly found in the car.
Daghestan has been plagued by violence linked to Islamic extremism and organized crime for years.
