No information on the treatment of street vendors by the police in Valparaíso and in other cities could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. A 28 July 1998 article from The News quotes the mayor of Santiago, Jaime Nicolas Ravinet, participating in a forum on crime and local governments, as saying that "his government has successfully gotten rid of the street merchants (ambulantes), whose businesses created ripe conditions for urban crime." He added that "former Santiago street merchants, who had to take their jobs because of the growth of unemployment, a decrease in wages and the upsurge in the informal economy, now can get in line for funds to help them relocate their businesses to malls" (ibid.).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
