A representative of the Embassy of the Portuguese Republic in Ottawa stated in a telephone interview with the DIRB that when Angola attained its independence in 1975, individuals holding Portuguese citizenship were given a certain period of time to apply for Portuguese citizenship (16 Jan. 1995). Those who did not avail themselves of this opportunity at the time are considered foreigners and are not to be entitled to Portuguese citizenship (ibid.). The Portuguese Citizenship Act, in Portuguese, will be forwarded to Regional Documentation Centres as soon as it is received in Ottawa by the DIRB.
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
