One person has been killed in a firefight at Turkey's border with Syria.

The Turkish military said its soldiers returned fire on a group of eight civilians trying to illegally cross the border late on July 22, killing one of them.

The shooting is the latest in a series of incidents on the Turkish-Syrian border which have increased concerns of a spillover of the Syrian conflict into Turkey.

Turkey shelters around 500,000 Syrian refugees, as well as rebels fighting against President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

In previous incidents, the Turkish military has been responding to stray fire from Syria landing on Turkish territory, and to attacks from smugglers or other people trying to cross the border illegally.

The military did not give the nationalities of the eight civilians involved in the incident.
