Information on the current situation in Haiti beyond that available at your Regional Documentation Centre through the IRBDC's Indexed Media Review and the Weekly Media Review could not be found among the sources currently available to the IRBDC. All articles specifically referring to the human rights situation in Haiti that are found in the publications received by the Ottawa IRBDC but not by the Regional Documentation Centres are currently being included in the Indexed Media Review. Other sources consulted by the IRBDC could not provide general statements on the situation of artists nor speculate on the consequences of having written or performed plays critical of the Tonton Macoutes.
The current government is said by some sources to have links with former Tonton Macoutes. According to an article recently received by the IRBDC, for example, deposed President Aristide apparently believes General Raoul Cedras is supported by former Tonton Macoutes (Latinamerica Press 31 Oct. 1991, 3). The article also refers to attacks on the media, but makes no specific references to artists and playwrights.
