Romanian prosecutors said on July 13 that they have indicted Prime Minister Victor Ponta in a criminal investigation into forgery, tax evasion, and money laundering.

The prosecutors said in a statement that they had also temporarily seized Ponta's assets.

The wide-ranging criminal investigation, which began in June, targets Ponta's past activities as a lawyer, before he became prime minister. At the time, Ponta was a member of parliament.

Ponta, 42, has denied any wrongdoing and promised to cooperate fully with prosecutors.

The investigation had sparked calls for Ponta to resign.

Ponta is the first sitting Romania prime minister to be indicted and have his assets seized.
