Police in the Kazakh capital, Astana, have detained a group of seven women who were protesting the confiscation of private land by the government.
The protesters were stopped by police and detained along with their young children on May 27 while they were marching toward the parliament building, where they planned to submit their petition.
Several similar actions have been held in Astana in recent weeks.
Protesters say local authorities routinely confiscate land from ordinary people and justify the move by citing "state necessities." Very often, they say, the confiscated lands are used to build private homes for local authorities or businessmen.
During similar protests in Astana earlier this year, activists accused city authorities of not paying enough after seizing private land and demolishing homes in order to construct new buildings for Nazarbaev University and other state buildings.
