Philippines: New physiotherapy clinic in Mindanao

The Davao Jubilee Foundation's physical rehabilitation centre in Mindanao opened a physiotherapy clinic last week to enhance treatment for the centre's patients, including those with physical disabilities resulting from armed violence.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) supported the construction of the new facilities.
The new clinic, which is equipped with individual treatment rooms and a "gait-training" area for patients learning to walk with an artificial limb or recovering from nervous-system injuries, can accommodate about 30 patients for physical therapy every month. In the first quarter of 2013, the rehabilitation centre treated more than 160 patients, fitting 41 patients with artificial limbs.
"This new facility will help patients to fully recover their confidence and function to their full potential, so they can overcome the constraints of their disability and regain their independence and dignity," said Catherine Fry, the ICRC's health delegate in Mindanao, a region affected by conflict and insecurity and the centre's main catchment area.
The Davao Jubilee Foundation is a non-profit organization. Its physical rehabilitation centre, to which the ICRC has been referring war-wounded patients since 2000, provides services for the physically disabled. The ICRC has helped the foundation to upgrade its facilities in recent years and also provides scholarships for employees to study prosthetics abroad.
