CHISINAU – Moldova's Liberal Party has said that the country's government behaved "undemocratically" and showed "obedience to Moscow" by banning an opposition protest calling for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Moldova, RFE/RL's Moldovan Service reports.

The Liberal Party had planned a rally on November 13 outside the Palace of the Republic in central Chisinau, the site of a November 14 CIS summit.

The protest had been authorized by city hall, which is run by Liberal Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca. But police cordoned off the area outside the palace, blocking demonstrators from the venue.

The demonstration then moved to the Russian Embassy. Russia has some 1,200 troops in Moldova's separatist Transdniester region.
