According to the attached Japan Economic Newswire, Bangladesh's Hindu community claimed that thousands of Hindu women were harassed during the violence following the destruction of the Babri Mosque by Hindus in Ayodhya, India (23 Dec. 1992), whereas the attached United Press International (UPI) report states that Bangladeshi opposition leaders alleged that nearly 3,000 Hindu women had been raped during the Ayodhya aftermath (26 Jan. 1993).

Please consult the attachment to Response to Information Request BGD20633.e of 27 April 1995 for information, provided by the Coordinating Council for Human Rights in Bangladesh (CCHRB) in Dhaka, on the general situation of Hindus in Bangladesh. Examples of the harassment and rape of Hindu women are also given by the CCHRB. This Response is available at Regional Documentation Centres.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
