Articles 18 to 20 of the Moldovan Law on Military Service Obligation set out provisions for the deferment of or exemption from of compulsory military service (Nezavisimaya Moldova 15 Apr. 1992). They do not specifically exempt those who have completed compulsory military service with the former Soviet armed forces from such service with the Moldovan army (ibid.). In addition, the Alternative Service Act does not provide such persons with the opportunity to substitute alternative service for compulsory military service (Moldova 9 July 1991a; ibid. 9 July 1991b).

Specific information on the practical application of the above-mentioned laws with respect to such persons could not be found in the sources consulted.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
