In addition to the information already available through your Regional Documentation Centre, please find attached several documents that deal with the political situation in Fiji since the May 1992 elections.

The attached documents report that, immediately after being elected prime minister, former coup leader Sitiveni Rabuka appealed for inter-ethnic understanding and considered this issue to be a priority. However, the current constitution, approved under Rabuka's previous administration, reportedly continues to guarantee the executive power and a parliamentary majority to indigenous Fijians. Other issues, such as the ban on organized activities on Sundays, which appears to affect non-Christian Indians in particular, and the recent resignation of the only Indo-Fijian cabinet minister over a police investigation of his jewellery business, are discussed in the attached articles.
