In correspondence with the Research Directorate, the Embassy of Sweden in Ottawa declared that where the parents both have custody of the minor child, both are required to sign on the child's application for passport, thereby allowing the child to receive a Swedish passport (Sweden 9 Sept. 2003). The parents are also required to present their passports (ibid.).
In cases where the parents are divorced and only one of them has custody of the minor child, a court decision declaring the individual with the legal custody of the child is required, along with only the legal guardian's signature on the child's passport application (ibid.). The Website of the Embassy of Sweden, in Ottawa, indicates that where the parents are divorced, "a copy of the custody documents" is required (Sweden 28 Aug. 2003).
There have been no changes to these requirements since January 2000 (Sweden 9 Sept. 2003).
