A 4-year-old Indian girl who was raped nearly two weeks ago has died in hospital.

A hospital spokesman said she died of a cardiac arrest at a hospital in central Naghpur city on April 29.

She was raped in a village in Madhya Pradesh state on April 18 and had been in a coma since then.

At least one suspect has been arrested.

Sexual violence against women has been the focus of attention in India since the fatal gang-rape of a 23-year-old student in New Delhi in December sparked nationwide protests.

The abduction and rape of a 5-year-old girl in the capital last week sparked another wave of protests.

Protesters say sexual violence against women in India has continued unabated despite the recent approval of laws imposing tougher penalties for rape.
