According to the author of The Hosken Report, Fran P. Hosken, the table of figures estimating the total number of women and girls operated on in continental Africa is based on "direct information about ethnic groups and/or geographic regions/provinces where genital mutilation is confirmed according to local reports, most of them from medical/hospital sources" (The Hosken Report: Genital and Sexual Mutilation of Females 1982, 34). For additional information on the figures, including an explanation of how estimates were arrived at for countries where information was lacking, please consult the attached table of figures and explanatory text. Please note that the table of figures in The Hosken Report (34) differs for some countries from the table of figures used by the Minority Rights Group report which is attached to Response to Information Request MLI19401.E of 12 January 1995. No other table of figures could be found in The Hosken Report which would corroborate the figures cited by the Minority Rights Group report.

For general information on female genital mutilation in Mali, please consult the attachments from The Hosken Report and The Hosken Report: Genital and Sexual Mutilation of Females: Postscript.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
