A 21 July 1999 letter sent to the Research Directorate by the Consular Officer of the Embassy of Sweden in Ottawa, states:

A Swedish Driver's Licence is normally valid for 10 years and is issued to persons 18 years and older after passing the exam. A Swedish Driver's License must be renewed before it expires. Persons living in Sweden are automatically sent a renewal notice a couple of months before the licence expires. Persons living abroad must themselves remember to renew their licences. The Embassy and Consulates in Canada have the form used to renew a Driver's Licence. The new Driver's Licence has to be picked up in person at the Embassy or Consulate closest to where the person lives.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
