Uzbek border guards have shot and wounded a Kyrgyz citizen in the latest violent incident in the tense border between the two Central Asian nations.
Kyrgyz Border Guard Service officials in the Batken region said Uzbek border guards opened fire while trying to detain two Kyrgyz men who were unloading goods on the Uzbek side of the frontier on November 10.
They said one of the men was detained and the other, who was shot and wounded, was hospitalized in Uzbekistan.
Locals who said they witnessed the incident told RFE/RL that at least five Uzbek citizens were wounded in the shooting, but that information has not been confirmed by Kyrgyz or Uzbek authorities.
Uzbek officials accused the two men of trying to bring unspecified illegal goods across the border.
About 300 kilometers of the 1,000-kilometer border have been disputed since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
