According to the World Confederation of Institutes and Libraries for Overseas Chinese Studies (WCILOCS), there are approximately 300 ethnic Chinese in Uruguay (Apr. 2001). An economics professor at the University of Missouri, using 1990 statistics, reported that there were 350 ethnic Chinese living in Uruguay out of a total of 3.09 million inhabitants (Gao Aug. 2001).

No information as to the number of ethnic Chinese living in Montevideo could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
