Information on this specific subject is currently unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa; however, it may be of interest to note that there was a failed attempt to overthrow the Maldivian government in November 1988 (AP 4 Nov. 1988; Inter Press Service 7 Nov. 1988). For details on this event as well as the public reactions to it, please refer to the attachments. The sources consulted indicate there were casualties in the fighting between the mercenaries who staged the coup attempt on one side and the small Maldivian security forces and the Indian commandos on the other. None of the sources indicates casualties related to the public demonstration of anger against the mercenaries after their arrest.
