The U.S. military says air strikes by a U.S.-led coalition have destroyed an Islamic State (IS) operating base at a stadium near the western city of Ramadi.

The Combined Joint Task Force said in a statement on September 9 the base was a key weapons depot used to supply IS fighters throughout the Euphrates River Valley and Anbar Province, large parts of which are controlled by the militant group.

Iraqi troops, Shi'ite militias, and Sunni tribesmen supported by coaliton air strikes are battling IS fighters in and around Ramadi and Fallujah, which are controlled by the IS group.

Ramadi is 100 kilometers west of Baghdad.

Meanwhile, Iraqi military officials said 13 soldiers were killed when IS suicide bombers attacked a military outpost near the Syrian border.

At least 13 others were reported injured by the suicide blast.
