Pakistan's military has said it killed 25 militants in air strikes on tribal areas near the Afghan border as part of a major offensive against the Taliban and other militants.
The strikes on February 4 targeted what Pakistan's army said were "seven hideouts" in the Sanzila area of South Waziristan and Tirah in Khyber.
Pakistan's military announced in June that it had begun a long-awaited push to clear militant bases from North Waziristan, shortly after a bloody Taliban attack on Karachi airport brought an end to faltering peace talks between the Pakistani Taliban and the government.
For years, Pakistan's tribal areas near the Afghan border have been a hideout for Islamist militants – including Al-Qaeda, the Haqqani network, and the Pakistani Taliban as well as foreign militants from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan and ethnic Uyghur fighters.
