A Pakistani court has issued arrest warrants for former Prime Minister Yusaf Raza Gilani and one of his senior ministers, Makhdoom Amin Fahim.

The pair stands accused of taking millions of dollars in bribes while in power.

An anticorruption court ordered the Federal Investigation Agency on August 27 to apprehend Gilani and Fahim and produce them before a judge on September 10.

Gilani, who was prime minister from 2008-12, can appeal to a higher court to allow him to post bail and avoid arrest before the hearing.

Former Commerce Minister Fahim is receiving cancer treatment in Britain.

Also on August 27, ex-Petroleum Minister Asim Hussain appeared before a court over another corruption case.

All three are senior figures of the opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which describes the cases against it as an attempt to stifle the party.
