No information on whether the Maitreya Great Tao Hep Kwong Temple Inc. is a Buddhist, Taoist or Tian Tao temple could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

Attempts to obtain information from the Maitreya Great Tao Hep Kwong Temple Inc. were unsuccessful within the time constraints of this Response. However, several documents on the Website of the City of Toronto refer to a temple called the Hep Kwong Tien Dao Temple Ontario Inc. located at 3471 Kennedy Road in Scarborough (Scarborough Community Council 23 May 2000; ibid. 8 May 2000; City of Toronto 9-11 May 2000). As well, volume 17 of the Golden Voice of Maitreya, a publication of the Taiwan-based Providence Maitreya Buddha Missionary Institute, referred to the 13 June 1999 "groundbreaking ceremony" held for the Hep Kwong Tian Dao Temple in Toronto (Nov. 1999). Reportedly, the leader of the Maitreya Buddha Missionary Institute, His Holiness, Grand Master Wang, "personally went to the meeting site and gave instructions on all preparations" (ibid.).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
