The governor of Pakistan's central Punjab Province has resigned, saying the country's political system has failed ordinary people.
Mohammad Sarwar said in a speech in Lahore on January 29 that "the system has failed to deliver to the masses."
He added that "the system is serving only the elite class and the common man is deprived of justice, rights, and prosperity."
Sarwar also voiced frustration at the lack of progress in Punjab, saying, "Social injustice is increasing in the province."
The resignation comes two days after he criticized the government for failing to persuade U.S. President Barack Obama to visit Pakistan after his visit to rival India.
Pakistan's ruling party appointed Sarwar, 62, to be governor of the country's most populous province in 2013.
He had served as a British parliament member for more than a decade.
