No information on the Sudanese New Forces Movement (or New Democratic Forces Movement/HAQ) - Canada could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
However, one source mentioned HAQ activities in Sudan. In a news release dated 1 December 1999 and carried on the allAfrica.com website, the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT) noted the arrest of 17 members of the "New Forces Movement (HAQ) on 24 November 1999" (OMCT 1 Dec. 1999). The arrests occurred:
whilst they were collecting signatures for a petition to be handed to the presidential palace, urging the government to speed up the reconciliation and peace process and to end the war with the opposition.
On November 25 1999 these detainees were released. However, the leader of HAQ, Al Haj Warraq, and seven other members were brought before the Public Order Courts on Monday 29 November 1999:
Al Haj Waraq, leader of HAQ inside Sudan ... (ibid.).
Information could not be obtained from a New York contact listed in a publication purportedly published by HAQ nor from an address in Canada, listed in the same document, due to a non-existent postal code.
