Figures published in January 1991 by Lidovne Noviny indicate that the population of Czechoslovakia in 1990 was 15 671 000, with the Slovak Republic accounting for 5 305 000 of this figure (FBIS-EEU-91-010, 28).

According to a 30 January 1991 report by Hospodarske Noviny, a national census was expected to be conducted in March of this year with preliminary results made available within four months (FBIS-EEU-91-024, 19). The CTK National News Wire reported on 1 March 1991 that these results will be public in June 1991. Please find attached an excerpt from Europa which gives 1987 estimates for population by nationality for both the Czech and Slovak Socialist Republics (Europa 1990 1990, 831).
