Syria: three Red Crescent volunteers wounded

Wednesday at 10:30 p.m., a team of volunteers from the Syrian Arab Red Crescent was taking an injured person to a hospital in the Al-Hamidiyah neighbourhood of Homs when their ambulance was struck by a total of 31 bullets. Three young first-aiders were injured, one of them seriously. They themselves were then taken to hospital, where they are now receiving care.
Both the ambulance and the first-aiders' uniforms clearly displayed the red crescent emblem. The circumstances of the incident remain unclear. It appears that the vehicle had first hit live electrical wires lying on the ground. This produced loud crackling noises and light flashes. The vehicle was then hit by the bullets.
The Syrian Arab Red Crescent, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent ?Societies join in calling on all those involved in the violence to do their utmost to facilitate Red Crescent efforts to come to the aid, in a fully impartial manner, of those in need.
Red Crescent volunteers provide first aid to the injured and take them to hospital. They, like all other medical personnel, must be allowed to carry out their life-saving work. Access to the injured must not be arbitrarily obstructed. Ambulances and medical facilities must be respected and spared by all and at all times.
